TEN THINGS A
MODEL SHOULD DO BEFORE CONTACTING A TALENT AGENT
Take Stock of Your Appearance
If you need to lose weight, clear up your
complexion, or have your teeth straightened, do it
before you waste time or money on photos.
Read About The
Industry
Most models start a young age and their naivety can
be harmful. Being aware of the scams and dangers and
deciding what you will do in certain situations will
prepare you before you're confronted with them.
Build a Resume
Any time you can do public speaking or acting, jump
at the chance. The more comfortable you can get in
front of a crowd or a camera, the more confident
you'll come across to an agent. Participating in a
beauty pageant can also get you exposure and help
you polish your poise.
Take Classes
Whether you want to do any acting or stick exclusive
with modeling, acting classes will show an agent
you're serious about polishing your skills. Beware
of expensive beauty schools unless you have a lot of
money you don't mind spending on classes that may or
may not benefit you. Most teach you makeup skills
you could learn for free by getting a makeover at
your local department store, as well as other
classes that are designed to make you feel like a
model whether you have any potential for modeling
career or not.
Have Your Photos
Done
One of the essential tools you'll use to market
yourself is your photo. Make sure it's the best one
possible. It's often the first impression you'll
make. Modeling agencies have different polices on
photos. Many will accept clear snapshots and others
insist on professional quality. The best agencies
will not charge you for photos or composite cards,
but some will refer you to photographers if you ask.
An agency should never insist that you use their
photographer and pay for the photos yourself.
Because policies vary from agency to agency,
research the agency's preference before you submit
your photos.
Research to Find
the Agents
Who represent people like you for the type of work
you're looking for. Then make a list of those who
are most appropriate to represent you.
Rank Your List
Use your list to determine the agents most suitable
for you and your goals, and to eliminate
inappropriate agencies.
Compose Your
Query Letter
As your first contact with an agents, this brief
letter should be polished and to the point.
Read About the
Business
Read about the business of agents so you are
knowledgeable and prepared to act on any offer.
Plug Into
Modeling Community
To Keep up on auditions and opportunities in your
ares. There are local web sites and theaters that
can be excellent networking tools. Once you've met
other models in your ares, ask those who have agents
how they found one and if they'd be willing to refer
you to theirs.
